Sabbatical Fall 2026

Urban Settlements is excited to share that we’ll be on a working sabbatical from October 9 through October 24. I will be splitting time between our ongoing project work and absorbing the rich urban qualities of Mexico City.

‍ ‍

The emphasis will be the city's historic, inward-facing housing typologies, studying how these traditional housing-based urban patterns balanced private living with shared spaces.

Specifically, I will be focused on”

  • Pedestrian reclamation of existing infrastructure/public realm. CDMX has great examples of human-scaled streets, open plazas, and bike lanes that navigate vehicular congestion in its dense central districts

  • Traditional urban form such as:

    • linear tenements (La Vecindad)

    • courtyard structures (Patio Central), and

    • pedestrian cul-de-sacs (La Privada).

I will also be examining contemporary infill work throughout the city to see how modern architects adapt these historic precedents today.

I look forward to sharing these experiences with you, and I intend for this experience to generate fresh insights that will reflect directly back into our work.
